After graduating the academy, new recruits are assigned to Field Training Officers for 16 weeks of intense one-on-one training. Field Training Officers (FTOs) perform as teachers, mentors and supervisors to recruit officers. FTOs teach recruit officers to apply lessons and knowledge learned in the academy to real world situations. Each recruit officer will normally be assigned to several different FTOs and rotate through all three shifts during field training. The 16 weeks* of field training are divided into four distinct phases:
- Phase I - 4 weeks in length
- Phase II - 5 weeks in length
- Phase III - 5 weeks in length
- Phase IV - 2 weeks in length
*Field training usually lasts 16 weeks unless a recruit officer requires additional training as recommended by their FTO
